Vessel Traffic Control

Vessel Traffic Control, also known as Vessel Traffic Service (VTS), is a marine traffic monitoring system established by harbour or port authorities to improve the safety and efficiency of navigation, safety of life at sea, and protection of the marine environment. VTS is designed to effectively manage vessel movements and provide navigational safety in a limited, specifically defined area, such as a port, harbor, or a waterway. The system uses radar, closed-circuit television (CCTV), VHF radiotelephony, Automatic Identification System (AIS), and other equipment to track and monitor vessel movements, providing real-time information to vessels and to the VTS center. The VTS center can provide navigational advice, traffic organization, and critical movement information to vessels within its area of responsibility. Vessel Traffic Control is crucial in congested waterways, particularly in conditions of poor visibility or heavy traffic, to prevent collisions and groundings.
