LNG-powered Vessels

LNG-powered vessels refer to ships that use Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) as their primary source of propulsion energy. LNG is a clear, colorless, non-toxic liquid that forms when natural gas is cooled to -162 degrees Celsius. The cooling process shrinks the volume of the gas 600 times, making it easier and safer to store and ship. In the maritime context, LNG is emerging as a cost-effective and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional marine fuels like diesel and heavy fuel oil. LNG-powered vessels produce significantly fewer emissions, including 90% less nitrogen oxide, up to 20% less carbon dioxide, and virtually no sulfur oxides or particulates. This makes them a preferred choice in regions with strict emission control regulations. Moreover, the use of LNG can also lead to lower operating costs over the vessel's lifecycle, due to the lower cost of LNG compared to traditional marine fuels. However, the adoption of LNG as a marine fuel also presents challenges, including the need for specialized fuel handling systems and infrastructure, and the higher initial cost of LNG-powered vessels.
