Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG)
In the maritime context, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) refers to natural gas that has been converted into a liquid state for ease of storage or transport. This process involves cooling the gas to approximately -162 degrees Celsius, which reduces its volume by a factor of 600. This allows large quantities of natural gas to be transported efficiently over long distances, typically by specialized LNG carriers. These vessels are designed with insulated storage tanks to maintain the low temperature of the LNG. In recent years, LNG has also been increasingly used as a cleaner alternative to traditional marine fuels, such as heavy fuel oil and diesel, in response to stricter environmental regulations. This has led to the development of LNG-powered vessels and the necessary bunkering infrastructure. However, the use of LNG in shipping also presents several challenges, including the risk of methane slip and the need for significant investment in new infrastructure and technologies.
