Carbon Dioxide
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a colorless, odorless gas that is naturally present in the Earth's atmosphere. It is a greenhouse gas that contributes to global warming and climate change. In the maritime context, carbon dioxide is used as a fire suppressant in enclosed spaces such as engine rooms, cargo holds, and machinery spaces. Carbon dioxide systems work by displacing oxygen, which can cause asphyxiation if proper precautions are not taken. Carbon dioxide is also produced by ships' engines and can contribute to air pollution and ocean acidification. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set regulations to limit the amount of carbon dioxide emissions from ships.
