Base Line
In maritime law, the base line is the line from which the seaward limits of a state's territorial sea and certain other maritime zones are measured. It is the low-water line along the coast, including the coasts of islands that are part of the state's territory. The base line can be straight or follow the natural contours of the coast. The breadth of the territorial sea, contiguous zone, and exclusive economic zone are measured from the base line. The base line is an important concept in determining a state's maritime boundaries and jurisdiction over its waters.
