Transverse Stability
Transverse stability is the ability of a vessel to resist capsizing or rolling excessively due to external forces acting on it, such as wind, waves, or cargo shifting. It is determined by the vessel's metacentric height (GM), which is the distance between the center of gravity (G) and the metacenter (M) of the vessel. A vessel with a high GM will have greater transverse stability and be less likely to capsize, while a vessel with a low GM will have less stability and be more prone to capsizing. Transverse stability is a critical factor in the design and operation of all types of vessels, from small boats to large ships.
