Sulphur Cap

In the maritime context, the Sulphur Cap refers to a regulation implemented by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) that limits the maximum sulphur content in fuel oil used on board ships. This regulation, known as IMO 2020, came into effect on January 1, 2020, and reduced the sulphur limit from 3.50% to 0.50%. The aim of the Sulphur Cap is to reduce the amount of sulphur oxide emissions from ships, which can cause harmful effects on human health and the environment. Sulphur oxide emissions can lead to respiratory symptoms and lung disease, as well as acid rain, which can harm crops, forests and aquatic species. The Sulphur Cap applies to all ships, regardless of their flag state, and is enforced through the MARPOL Annex VI. Ships can comply with the Sulphur Cap by using low-sulphur fuel oil, using a scrubber system to clean the emissions before they are released into the atmosphere, or by using alternative fuels such as liquefied natural gas (LNG).
