Low Sulphur Fuel Oil
Low Sulphur Fuel Oil (LSFO) is a type of fuel oil that has a lower sulphur content compared to traditional fuel oils used in maritime operations. The reduction in sulphur content is in response to international regulations aimed at reducing the emission of sulphur oxides (SOx), which are harmful to the environment and human health. LSFO is used in the engines of ships and other maritime vessels to power their operations. The use of LSFO has become more prevalent since the implementation of the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) 2020 sulphur cap, which limits the sulphur content in marine fuels to 0.5% m/m (mass by mass), down from the previous limit of 3.5% m/m. This regulation has led to a significant shift in the maritime industry, with many operators switching to LSFO or other compliant fuels to meet the new requirements. The transition to LSFO has also brought about challenges, including issues related to fuel availability, price volatility, and engine compatibility.
