Sulphur Content
In the maritime context, sulphur content refers to the amount of sulphur present in the fuel used by ships. Sulphur is a natural component in crude oil from which marine fuel is derived. When fuel with high sulphur content is burned, it releases sulphur oxides (SOx) into the atmosphere, contributing to air pollution and acid rain. To mitigate these environmental impacts, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set limits on the sulphur content in marine fuels. The most recent regulation, known as IMO 2020, mandates a maximum sulphur content of 0.50% m/m (mass by mass) for fuel oil used on board ships operating outside designated emission control areas. This is a significant reduction from the previous limit of 3.50% m/m. Ships can meet the sulphur limit by using low-sulphur compliant fuel oil, alternative energy sources, or exhaust gas cleaning systems (scrubbers) to remove the sulphur oxides from the ship's engine and boiler exhaust gases.
