Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR)
Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) is a maritime technology used to reduce the level of harmful nitrogen oxides (NOx) emitted by ship engines. It is an advanced active emissions control technology system that injects a liquid-reductant agent through a special catalyst into the exhaust stream of a diesel engine. The reductant source is usually automotive-grade urea, also known as Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF). The DEF sets off a chemical reaction that converts nitrogen oxides into nitrogen, water, and a tiny amount of carbon dioxide (CO2), which is then expelled through the vehicle tailpipe. SCR technology is one of the most cost-effective and fuel-efficient technologies available to help reduce diesel engine emissions. It is widely used in the maritime industry to comply with international emission standards set by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
