Nitrogen

Nitrogen is a chemical element with the symbol N and atomic number 7. It is a diatomic gas that makes up about 78% of the Earth's atmosphere. In the maritime context, nitrogen is used in various applications such as in the production of ammonia for use in refrigeration systems, as a purging agent to remove oxygen and other contaminants from pipelines and tanks, and as a fire suppressant in enclosed spaces. Nitrogen is also used in the diving industry to prevent decompression sickness, commonly known as the bends. It is used as a breathing gas in deep-sea diving and as a component of breathing air for surface-supply diving.
