Hood

Hood was the last battlecruiser built for the Royal Navy during World War I. One of four Admiral-class battlecruisers ordered in mid-1916, she was commissioned in 1920. She was named after Admiral Samuel Hood, 1st Viscount Hood, who was killed in the Battle of the Chesapeake in 1781. Hood saw extensive service in the Mediterranean throughout the 1920s and 1930s, including participation in the Spanish Civil War, and also served in the Atlantic and Home Fleets. She was attached to the Mediterranean Fleet following the outbreak of the Second World War and was sunk by the German battleship Bismarck in May 1941, during the Battle of the Denmark Strait.
