Quadrant
A quadrant is a navigational instrument used to measure angles up to 90 degrees relative to the horizon. It consists of a graduated arc of 90 degrees and a vertical staff or alidade, which is used to sight the celestial body. The quadrant was widely used in the 17th and 18th centuries for celestial navigation, allowing sailors to determine their latitude at sea. It was eventually replaced by the sextant, which is a more accurate and versatile instrument. However, the quadrant remains an important historical artifact and is still used by some sailors and navigators today.
