Nitrogen Oxides (NOx)

In the maritime context, Nitrogen Oxides (NOx) refer to a group of gases that are primarily composed of nitrogen and oxygen, including nitric oxide (NO) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2). These gases are produced as a result of combustion processes, such as those occurring in marine engines and boilers. NOx emissions are a significant environmental concern in the maritime industry due to their contribution to air pollution and climate change. They can lead to the formation of acid rain, contribute to the depletion of the ozone layer, and are a precursor to the formation of harmful particulate matter and ground-level ozone, which can have detrimental effects on human health and the environment. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set stringent regulations to control NOx emissions from ship exhausts, particularly through the MARPOL Annex VI. Various technologies and strategies, such as Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR), Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), and the use of cleaner fuels, are employed to reduce NOx emissions from ships.
