Cleaner Fuels

In the maritime context, cleaner fuels refer to the types of fuel that produce fewer emissions and pollutants when burned in ship engines, contributing to a reduction in the environmental impact of maritime activities. These fuels are a key component in the shipping industry's efforts to comply with international regulations aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating climate change. Cleaner fuels include low-sulfur fuel oil (LSFO), liquefied natural gas (LNG), biofuels, and hydrogen. LSFO is a type of fuel oil that contains a lower concentration of sulfur, reducing the amount of sulfur dioxide released into the atmosphere. LNG is a clean-burning fossil fuel that produces fewer emissions than traditional fuel oil. Biofuels are derived from organic materials and are renewable, while hydrogen, when used in fuel cells, only emits water vapor, making it a zero-emission fuel. The transition to cleaner fuels in the maritime industry requires significant investment in new infrastructure and technologies, as well as changes in ship design and operation.
