Masthead Light
A masthead light is a white light placed on the highest part of a vessel that is visible from all directions. It is used to indicate the presence and position of the vessel to other vessels and is required to be displayed by all vessels underway between sunset and sunrise. The masthead light has a minimum visibility range of 2 nautical miles and must be placed at a height above the hull of at least 20 feet. On vessels over 50 meters in length, the masthead light must be accompanied by a second masthead light placed at least 6 meters horizontally away from the first one. The masthead light is an essential component of the vessel's navigation lights system.
