Luff

Luff refers to the forward edge of a sail that is facing into the wind. When a sailboat is sailing upwind, the sails are trimmed so that the luff of the sail is as close to the wind direction as possible without luffing or flapping. This is known as sailing close-hauled. The luff of a sail is typically attached to the mast or a stay, and tension can be adjusted using the halyard. Proper luff tension is important for sail shape and performance. In addition, luff tension can be used to depower the sail in strong winds, reducing heeling and maintaining control.
