Balk

A balk is an obstacle intentionally placed in the way of a vessel to impede its progress. This can be a physical obstruction such as a log or chain, or a legal obstruction such as a toll or embargo. Balks were commonly used in naval warfare to slow down enemy ships and make them more vulnerable to attack. In modern times, balks are still used in some waterways to regulate traffic and prevent collisions. However, they are also considered a hazard to navigation and must be clearly marked and maintained to ensure safe passage.
