Mast

A mast is a tall vertical spar, or arrangement of spars, which supports the sails, rigging, and other equipment of a ship. Masts are typically made of wood, steel, or aluminum and are secured to the deck of the ship by standing rigging. The height and number of masts on a ship depend on the size and purpose of the vessel. Masts are an essential component of a ship's rigging and are used to control the shape and position of the sails, which in turn affect the ship's speed and direction. The top of the mast is often referred to as the masthead, and the bottom is called the mastfoot.
