Intertropical Convergence Zone
The Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. It is characterized by convective activity which generates often vigorous thunderstorms over large areas. The ITCZ shifts its position seasonally and follows the sun, resulting in wet and dry seasons in the tropics. Mariners crossing the ITCZ may experience calms, squalls, and thunderstorms. The ITCZ is an important feature for shipping and navigation as it affects the weather patterns and wind directions in the tropical regions.
