Dowse

Dowse is a technique used in maritime navigation to determine the depth of water beneath a vessel. It involves lowering a weighted line, called a sounding line, over the side of the vessel until it touches the bottom. The length of the line that is submerged is then measured and used to calculate the depth of the water. Dowse is an important technique for ensuring the safety of a vessel, as it allows the crew to determine the depth of the water and avoid running aground or hitting underwater obstacles.
