Doldrums
Doldrums refer to a frequently windless area near the Equator, where the northeast and southeast trade winds converge. The Inter-Tropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) is a belt of low pressure which circles the Earth generally near the equator where the trade winds of the Northern and Southern Hemispheres come together. The convergence of the trade winds causes air to rise and form clouds, leading to frequent thunderstorms and heavy rainfall. The doldrums are notorious among sailors for their unpredictable weather patterns, often characterized by long periods of calm winds and stifling heat. Historically, sailing ships were often stranded in the doldrums for weeks or even months, leading to food and water shortages and sometimes even mutiny.
