Stern Board

A stern board is a large flat board that is attached to the stern of a ship and can be lowered into the water to act as a rudder. It is typically used on sailing ships as a backup steering mechanism in case the ship's main rudder becomes damaged or inoperable. The stern board is controlled by ropes or chains that allow it to be raised or lowered as needed. It is also sometimes used to help maneuver the ship in tight spaces, such as when docking or navigating through narrow channels.
