Coaming

A coaming is a raised edge or rim around the opening of a hatch or any other similar opening on a ship's deck or deckhouse. The purpose of a coaming is to prevent water from entering the opening and to provide a surface for securing a hatch cover or other closure. Coamings are typically made of wood, steel, or aluminum and are designed to withstand the forces of the sea. They are an important part of a ship's watertight integrity and are subject to inspection and maintenance to ensure their effectiveness.
