Caulker

A caulker is a skilled tradesperson who seals the seams between planks on wooden boats to prevent leaks. Caulking is the process of filling the gaps between planks with a flexible material, such as oakum (hemp fiber soaked in pine tar), cotton, or synthetic materials, and then sealing it with a waterproof compound, such as pitch or tar. The caulker's job is crucial to the seaworthiness of a vessel, as leaks can cause damage to the hull and compromise the safety of the crew. In addition to wooden boats, caulking is also used in the construction of other watercraft, such as canoes and kayaks.
