Oakum

Oakum is a preparation of tarred fiber used to seal gaps and seams in wooden boats, ships, and buildings. It is made by taking old hemp or jute rope and impregnating it with tar, creating a waterproof material that can be easily packed into gaps. Oakum is commonly used to seal the seams between planks in wooden boats, preventing water from entering the hull. It is also used in the construction of masonry buildings to seal gaps between bricks or stones. In addition to its sealing properties, oakum can also be used as a fireproofing material, as it is highly resistant to flames.
