Carbon Sequestration

Carbon sequestration is the process of capturing and storing atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO2) in order to mitigate global climate change. In the maritime context, carbon sequestration can be achieved through a variety of methods, including ocean fertilization, which involves adding nutrients to the ocean to stimulate the growth of phytoplankton, which in turn absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. Another method is the injection of CO2 into sub-seabed geological formations, which can store the gas for thousands of years. Additionally, the creation of artificial reefs and the restoration of coastal wetlands can also sequester carbon. These methods have the potential to not only reduce the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere, but also provide benefits to marine ecosystems.
