Carbon Footprint
Carbon Footprint is the total amount of greenhouse gases (GHG) emissions caused by an individual, organization, event, product or service, expressed as carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). In the maritime context, carbon footprint refers to the amount of GHG emissions produced by ships during their operation, including the burning of fossil fuels, such as diesel and heavy fuel oil, and the release of methane from cargo and waste. The carbon footprint of shipping is a significant contributor to global warming and climate change, and the International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set targets to reduce GHG emissions from shipping by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008 levels.
