Carbon Dioxide Emissions

In the maritime context, carbon dioxide emissions refer to the release of carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere as a result of activities carried out by ships. These activities include the combustion of fossil fuels for propulsion, the operation of onboard machinery, and the production of electricity. The International Maritime Organization (IMO) estimates that ships contribute about 2.2% of the world's total CO2 emissions. This is a significant amount, considering the global impact of CO2 on climate change. The maritime industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its carbon footprint, with several strategies being explored. These include the use of alternative fuels, such as liquefied natural gas (LNG), the implementation of energy-efficient technologies, and the adoption of slower steaming speeds. The IMO has set ambitious targets for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from ships, aiming to reduce the total annual GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2050 compared to 2008.
