Abaft
Abaft refers to the rear part of a ship or behind a particular part of a ship. It is used to describe the location of an object or a point on a ship that is towards the stern or behind the ship. For example, the captain's cabin is located abaft of the wheelhouse. The opposite of abaft is forward or towards the bow of the ship. Abaft is also used to describe the position of sails or yards on a sailing ship. Sails that are positioned behind the mast are said to be abaft the mast. Similarly, a yard that is positioned behind another yard is said to be abaft that yard.
