Anode

An anode is a sacrificial metal that is intentionally installed on a ship's hull or other metal structure to prevent corrosion. When two different metals are in contact in seawater, an electrochemical reaction occurs that causes the more active metal to corrode. By attaching an anode made of a more active metal, such as zinc or aluminum, to the hull, the anode corrodes instead of the hull. This process is known as cathodic protection. Anodes need to be periodically replaced as they corrode over time and lose their effectiveness.
