Whale Oil

Whale oil is a type of oil obtained from the blubber of whales. It has been used for various purposes throughout history, including as a fuel for lamps and as a lubricant for machinery. In the maritime context, whale oil was commonly used as a fuel for lamps on board ships, particularly in the 19th century. It was also used as a lubricant for the moving parts of machinery, such as the gears and bearings of windlasses and capstans. However, the use of whale oil declined in the 20th century due to the development of alternative sources of fuel and lubricants, as well as the decline in whale populations caused by overfishing.
