Deadweight Tons

Deadweight Tons (DWT) is the total weight of all cargo, fuel, stores, and ballast that a vessel can carry when loaded to its maximum draft. It is the difference between the displacement of a ship in water when it is empty and when it is fully loaded. Deadweight Tons is an important metric for determining a ship's carrying capacity and is used by shippers, charterers, and brokers to calculate freight rates. It is also a critical factor in determining a vessel's stability and safety, as exceeding the DWT can lead to overloading and potential accidents.
