Undertow

Undertow is a strong and often dangerous current that is caused by the seaward return of water that has come ashore in waves. It can occur in any body of water, but is particularly common in areas with breaking waves, such as the surf zone near beaches. Undertow can be difficult to detect, as it is often not visible on the surface of the water. It can be dangerous for swimmers and surfers, as it can pull them out to sea and make it difficult for them to return to shore. Undertow is influenced by a variety of factors, including wave height, wave period, and beach slope.
