Surf Zone

The surf zone is the area where waves break as they approach the shore. It extends from the point where waves begin to break, through the area where waves are breaking, and up to the limit of the swash zone. The surf zone is characterized by high energy and turbulence, and is influenced by a variety of factors including wave height, wave period, water depth, and bottom topography. The surf zone is an important area for a variety of activities including surfing, swimming, and beach recreation, but can also be dangerous due to strong currents and rip currents that can pull swimmers out to sea.
