Telegraph
Telegraph is a communication system that uses electrical signals to transmit messages over long distances. In maritime context, telegraph is used to communicate between the bridge and the engine room of a ship. The telegraph system consists of two units, one on the bridge and the other in the engine room. The bridge unit is operated by the officer on watch and the engine room unit is operated by the engineer. The officer on watch uses the telegraph to send commands to the engine room regarding the speed and direction of the ship. The engineer receives the commands and adjusts the engine accordingly. The telegraph system is an important tool for safe navigation and maneuvering of the ship.
