Taffrail

Taffrail is a railing or a low screen fitted to the aft end of the ship's deck, especially around the stern gallery, to prevent people from falling overboard. It is usually made of wood or metal and is an important safety feature on ships. The taffrail also serves as a decorative element and is often carved or decorated with intricate designs. In addition to its safety and decorative functions, the taffrail also provides a mounting point for navigation lights and other equipment. The term 'taffrail' is derived from the Old English word 'taefr', which means 'stern'.
