Rip Currents
Rip currents are powerful, narrow channels of fast-moving water that flow away from the shore, often occurring at low spots or breaks in sandbars. They can be difficult to spot, but are common on beaches with breaking waves. Rip currents can be hazardous to swimmers, as they can pull even the strongest swimmers out to sea. It is important to know how to identify and avoid rip currents, and to swim parallel to the shore if caught in one, rather than trying to swim against the current.
