Stays

Stays are the supporting ropes or wires that run from the mast to the sides of a ship, used to provide lateral support and prevent the mast from falling backwards. They are an essential part of the standing rigging of a sailing vessel and are typically made of steel wire or synthetic fiber. Stays are named according to their position on the ship, such as forestay, backstay, and shroud. The tension of the stays can be adjusted to control the shape and angle of the mast, which affects the performance of the sails and the stability of the ship.
