Sidelights
Sidelights are a pair of lights fitted on the port and starboard sides of a vessel, which are used to indicate the presence and direction of the vessel to other vessels in low visibility conditions. These lights are usually mounted on the vessel's superstructure and are visible from a distance of 2 miles. The sidelights are colored green on the starboard side and red on the port side, and they shine from dead ahead to 112.5 degrees abaft the beam on their respective sides. Sidelights are an essential part of the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) and must be used by all vessels underway between sunset and sunrise and during periods of restricted visibility.
