Starboard

Starboard refers to the right-hand side of a ship or boat when facing forward. It is the opposite of port, which refers to the left-hand side of a ship or boat when facing forward. The term starboard comes from the Old English steorbord, meaning the side on which the steering paddle or rudder was located. In modern maritime usage, the term is used to indicate the direction of a turn, as in 'hard to starboard' or 'hard to port'. The starboard side of a ship is also used to indicate the location of certain equipment, such as the starboard anchor or the starboard lifeboat.
