Ship Motion
Ship motion refers to the movement of a vessel in response to the forces acting upon it. These forces can be generated by wind, waves, currents, and the ship's own propulsion system. The six degrees of freedom that describe ship motion are heave, sway, surge, roll, pitch, and yaw. Heave is the vertical motion of the ship, sway is the lateral motion, and surge is the longitudinal motion. Roll is the rotation of the ship about its longitudinal axis, pitch is the rotation about its transverse axis, and yaw is the rotation about its vertical axis. Understanding ship motion is important for the safety and comfort of passengers and crew, as well as for the design and operation of ships.
