Shift Of Butts
Shift of Butts is a term used in naval architecture to describe the movement of the transverse metacenter of a ship due to a change in the position of weights on board. The transverse metacenter is the point at which a vertical line passing through the center of buoyancy intersects with the centerline of the ship. When weights are shifted on board, the center of gravity of the ship changes, causing the transverse metacenter to shift as well. This can affect the stability of the ship and may require corrective action to be taken by the crew.
