Sandwich Panels

Sandwich panels are composite materials made of two thin and stiff face sheets (usually made of metals such as aluminum or steel) and a lightweight core (such as foam, honeycomb, or balsa wood) that are bonded together to create a strong and lightweight panel. In the maritime context, sandwich panels are commonly used in shipbuilding for constructing decks, bulkheads, and superstructures. They offer high strength-to-weight ratio, excellent thermal and acoustic insulation, and good fire resistance. Sandwich panels can be prefabricated offsite and then installed on the ship, which can significantly reduce construction time and cost.
