Heel

Heel is the degree to which a vessel tilts or leans to one side in the water. It is caused by the distribution of weight on board, such as cargo, fuel, and passengers. Heel can affect the stability and maneuverability of a vessel, and excessive heel can lead to capsizing. The angle of heel is measured by the difference between the vertical axis of the vessel and the waterline. Heel can be controlled by adjusting the weight distribution or by using ballast tanks to shift the center of gravity. In sailing, heel can also affect the performance of the sails and the speed of the vessel.
