Rake

Rake is the angle of a ship's stem or sternpost from the vertical. It is measured by the inclination of the bow or stern from a perpendicular line to the waterline. A raked stem or sternpost slopes backward from the waterline towards the keel. Rake is an important design feature of a ship as it affects the vessel's speed, stability, and maneuverability. A greater rake angle can improve a ship's speed by reducing the water resistance and increasing the waterline length. However, too much rake can make the ship unstable and difficult to handle in rough seas. Rake is commonly seen in the design of sailing vessels, particularly in the bowsprit and jib boom.
