Pulley

A pulley is a simple machine that consists of a wheel with a groove in its rim that is used to change the direction and magnitude of a force applied to a rope or cable. Pulleys are commonly used in maritime applications to lift heavy loads, such as cargo or anchors, or to hoist sails. The mechanical advantage of a pulley system is determined by the number of ropes or cables that are used to support the load. A single pulley provides no mechanical advantage, but a system of multiple pulleys, known as a block and tackle, can provide a significant mechanical advantage. Pulleys can be made of various materials, including wood, metal, and plastic.
