Mechanical Advantage
Mechanical Advantage refers to the ratio of the force produced by a machine to the force applied to it. In the maritime context, mechanical advantage is often used to describe the use of pulleys and other mechanical devices to lift heavy loads. By using a system of pulleys, a small force can be used to lift a much larger weight. The mechanical advantage of a pulley system is determined by the number of pulleys used and the configuration of the ropes or cables. In general, the more pulleys used, the greater the mechanical advantage. Mechanical advantage is an important concept in maritime operations, where heavy loads must be lifted and moved on a regular basis.
