Prolonged Blast
Prolonged Blast is a sound signal made by a vessel to indicate that it is about to depart. It is a continuous sound signal that lasts between four to six seconds. This signal is made by vessels of 100 meters or more in length before they depart from a berth. The signal warns other vessels in the vicinity of the departing vessel's intention to leave and alerts them to take necessary action to avoid a collision. Prolonged Blast is also used in restricted visibility to indicate the presence of a vessel underway. It is an important signal for the safety of navigation in the maritime domain.
