Restricted Visibility
Restricted visibility refers to a situation in which a vessel's ability to see and be seen is significantly limited due to weather conditions such as fog, heavy rain, snow, or sandstorms. In such conditions, the visibility range is reduced to less than 1,000 meters, making it difficult for vessels to navigate safely and avoid collisions. During restricted visibility, vessels are required to take appropriate measures to avoid collisions, such as reducing speed, sounding fog signals, and posting extra lookouts. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea (COLREGS) provide specific guidelines for vessels operating in restricted visibility to ensure safe navigation.
